Ardente shelf lighting
How simple, universal LED strips turn shelves into sales engines

Walk any store and you’ll see it: some bays feel alive, others don’t. The product is the same, the prices are similar, but one area pulls you in and another you just walk past.

Very often, the difference is not the merchandising plan – it’s the light.

Ardente was born from that simple observation. Retailers had invested in good shelving, good ranges and good front‑of‑house lighting, but the products on the shelf were still sitting in the shadows. We wanted a solution that:

  • Puts light exactly where the margin is – on the product, not the ceiling
  • Fits almost any shelving system without a redesign
  • Is easy to install, easy to adjust, and easy to live with

Why shelf lighting matters more than you think

General store lighting makes a space workable. It doesn’t do a great job of:

  • Picking out high‑margin products
  • Helping colours and packaging really stand out
  • Making categories look “premium” and well cared for

Shelf‑level lighting changes the picture:

  • Focus: It pulls the eye directly to the items you care about – beauty, health, premium food, spirits, gifts, high‑margin add‑ons.
  • Perception: Better‑lit product simply looks higher quality and fresher. The same pack can feel “value” on a dull shelf and “special” on a lit one.
  • Clarity: Labels, sizes and variants are easier to read, reducing hesitation and “I can’t find it” moments.

You don’t just see more; you value more what you see.

What makes Ardente different

Ardente is our answer to all the ways shelf lighting projects usually go wrong: over‑complicated, expensive to fit, hard to adjust, locked to one system.

We designed it around a few non‑negotiables:

  1. Universal and retrofittable

    • Ardente is a universal LED shelf lighting system that can be fitted to almost any existing shelving – CAEM or not.
    • You don’t have to change your gondolas to get the benefit.
    • It can be retrofitted into live stores with minimal disruption.
  2. Easy to install and adjust

    • Fixings are engineered so that:
      • Installers can fit it quickly, bay after bay.
      • When shelf heights change, the lighting can move with them without a full rewire.
    • This is crucial in real retail life, where planograms and shelf positions are never frozen.
  3. Simple, robust construction

    • Designed to live in a retail environment, not just a showroom:
      • Solid profiles and connectors
      • Proper protection for cables and contacts
      • Components that stand up to cleaning and day‑to‑day knocks
  4. Commercially sensible

    • Ardente is priced so that the return on investment is a no‑brainer:
      • You’re not funding an art installation; you’re investing in a workhorse that quietly helps your margins every day.

We approached it as a manufacturer, not as a lighting boutique: engineering first, aesthetics built on top.

Trusted by a 700‑store pharmacy chain

One of the clearest signs that Ardente works in the real world is how quickly serious retailers standardise on it once they’ve tried it.

A UK pharmacy chain with around 700 stores has now adopted Ardente on every shopfit. They made that decision for two very practical reasons:

  • They’ve seen how easy it is to fit:

    • Installers and shopfitters can add Ardente as part of the normal fixture build.
    • Adjusting shelf heights and re‑positioning lights is straightforward during refits and range changes.
  • They’ve seen how much it increases sales:

    • Key health, beauty and OTC categories look clearer, brighter and more premium.
    • High‑margin lines aren’t “lost” in shadow under upper shelves; they are the first thing customers’ eyes land on.

For a chain of that size to roll Ardente into every project, it has to be more than a nice idea. It has to work for pharmacists, store teams, shopfitters and finance – and in their experience, it does.

Where Ardente earns its keep

Shelf lighting helps almost anywhere, but there are zones where Ardente really proves its value:

  • Beauty and cosmetics

    • Packaging is designed to sparkle and shine – but only if it gets the right light.
    • Ardente makes colours, textures and metallics pop, turning a flat bay into a real display.
  • Health & OTC

    • Clear, bright light improves legibility of dosages, variants and benefits.
    • It helps customers navigate faster and reduces “I can’t find it” questions at the counter.
  • Premium food and drink

    • Spirits, wines, specialty foods and gifting ranges all sell better when they look cared for.
    • Shelf lighting removes the shadow gaps under upper shelves that make products look dull.
  • Impulse and add‑on categories

    • End bays, feature units and eye‑level shelves for high‑margin items respond extremely well to focused light.
    • If you’re going to pay for that space, it makes sense to use lighting to get the most out of it.

In each of these, Ardente doesn’t replace your main lighting – it finishes the job it can’t do.

Fitting Ardente into real stores – without tearing them apart

One of my priorities in developing Ardente was practicality. I’ve seen too many concepts that look brilliant in a render and become a nightmare on site.

So we designed the system around real constraints:

  • Existing shelving stays

    • Ardente works with standard shelf fronts and structures.
    • You can phase it in store by store, or even bay by bay, without changing the core system.
  • Fast rollout is realistic

    • Because the fixing and wiring logic is repeatable, trained teams can move quickly.
    • That makes national or multi‑site upgrades realistic, not just a couple of “showcase” stores.
  • Maintainable over time

    • Components are modular, so if a section is damaged or needs changing, you don’t have to rip out a whole run.
    • You can add more strips or adjust the layout as your categories and furniture change.

For us, that’s what makes a solution genuinely “retail ready”: not just good light, but light that fits how retailers actually work.

Why this matters for your P&L

From a P&L point of view:

  • You’ve already paid for the space: rent, rates, utilities.
  • You’ve already paid for the fixture and the stock.
  • Ardente is about making that space and stock earn more.

It does that by:

  • Lifting the perceived quality of the products on those shelves
  • Increasing the chance that customers notice and choose higher‑margin lines
  • Helping staff and shoppers find the right items faster

The incremental cost of adding Ardente to the shelves that matter is small compared with the value of the products sitting on them – especially over the many years those fixtures will be in use.

If a 700‑store pharmacy chain has decided Ardente is worth specifying on every shopfit, that tells you everything you need to know: this is not cosmetic fluff. It’s a practical, repeatable way to turn good shelving into a more powerful sales engine.
